Workshop on review of "Strategic Master Plan for the Rehabilitation of Uranium Heritage Territories in Central Asia"
On January 12-13, 2017, at the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency Regional Training Center of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan was held a workshop on document review of "Strategic Master Plan for the Rehabilitation of Uranium Heritage Territories in Central Asia" prepared by the IAEA Coordinating Group (CGULS, IAEA). The new plan, developed under the leadership of the IAEA in cooperation with experts from the region and international organizations, provides a framework for carrying out remediation activities in a timely, coordinated and sustainable manner. The document aimed at applying of unified approach by Central Asian countries on the reclamation of uranium heritage sites to avoid inefficient use of donor сountries. This document is being prepared for submission for the participants of the Conference in the future.
The IAEA representatives attended the workshop: Michelle Roberts - Scientific Secretary of the CGULS Coordination Group, Neil Kelly - Consultant expert from the UK. The representatives' RT ministries: The Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency, the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies, the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of health and social protection of the population, the Environmental Protection Committee, the Committee on Emergency Situations and Civil Defense, the Customs Service. The operators from Tajik Rare Metals Sites joined as well.
A draft document of "StrategicMasterPlanfortheRehabilitationofUraniumHeritageTerritoriesinCentralAsia" was submitted for consideration by IAEA representatives. Besides, during the workshop, the main tasks and aims of the document were explained to the participants of the seminar, and participants offered their proposals as well. Moreover, two presentations concerning the legislative framework for the reclamation of uranium heritage sites and their current status were also presented by Tajikistan.
