Transportation of radioactive waste from various country’s enterprises to the Republican radioactive waste disposal site.
On January 24, 2013, the laboratory of technical services of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency (NRSA), organized the safe transportation of 66 radioactive sources that have spent their resources to the Republican radioactive waste disposal site. The procedure of transportation has been implemented within the framework of the signed work plan between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Government of the United States of America in the field of prevention of smuggling of nuclear and radioactive materials.
Forty-eight sources belonged to State Unitary Enterprise “TALKO” and eighteen sources to “Central Laboratory” of the Main Department of Geology under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan. These sources were transported from the above-mentioned organizations to the NRSA technical services laboratory for temporary storage in November 2012.
All specified requirements concerning the transportation of radioactive materials, packaging and packages have been met.
Transportation was carried out following the current regulatory documents:
1. Safety Regulations for the Transport of Radioactive Materials, No. 599, registered with the Ministry of Justice on January 26, 2011, prepared based on the IAEA document: "Regulation for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material 1996 (as amended 2009)."
2. Requirements for physical protection of radiation sources, radioactive storage points, No. 601a, registered with the Ministry of Justice on November 8, 2012.
The arrangement of transportation of spent radioactive materials undergoes three phases: preparatory, transportation and conclusive.
All personnel involved in the process of transporting radioactive materials were familiarized with:
- Basics of radiation protection,
- Emergency measures,
- Quality assurance,
- Enforcement of regulations,
- Special conditions which may arise during transportation.
Spent radioactive materials were related to the 2-nd category following the document "HAZARD CATEGORIES OF IONIZING RADIATION SOURCES AND RULES FOR THEIR ESTABLISHMENT," No. 602, registered with the Ministry of Justice on 9 February 2011, so it was escorted by the patrol car. The route was agreed in advance.
All work was carried out with the financial support of the US Department of Energy, the National Nuclear Safety Administration (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory).
