A scientific seminar on "Cooperation of the Republic of Tajikistan with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)" was held at the Branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University in Dushanbe on January 28, 2021.

The Director of Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan (NRSA NAST), Dr. Ilhom Mirsaidzoda made a presentation on international cooperation with IAEA and ensuring radiation safety in the Republic of Tajikistan. In his speech, he had given a comprehensive presentation on following topics:

1. The world's central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co-operation in the nuclear field – the International Atomic Energy Agency, the legal and regulatory framework, and safety standards.

2. The Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan - the state regulatory authority for ensuring radiation safety in the Republic of Tajikistan. Including the main areas of activity of NRSA, structure, the regulatory documents, implemented projects.

During the presentation, special attention was paid to the international cooperation between NRSA and IAEA, being one of the key areas of activity that contributes to the implementation of international and national projects. Thanks to cooperation with the IAEA, a large number of international projects in the field of radiation safety has been implemented in Tajikistan. Among them, the modernization of oncological centers of the Republic of Tajikistan in accordance with international requirements and standards, the updating of the equipment of these centers, which has made a significant contribution to the treatment of patients with cancer. Provision of modern equipment (mobile radiation portals, manual equipment for the detection of radioactive materials, equipment for the detection of illegal transportation of nuclear and radioactive materials) to the Customs Service under the GRT and the Border Troops of the State Security Service of the Republic of Tajikistan. Conducting the regional courses and seminars on operating of equipment by NRSA employees and IAEA international experts allow train specialists, upgrade their qualification in the intended field and demonstrate the practical use of this equipment.

Furthermore, he spoke about the Republican radioactive disposal site, located in the western part of the Republic of Tajikistan, emphasizing how radioactive waste transportation activities are being carried out and the conducting of research works to determine the area of radioactive materials.  Moreover, he mentioned uranium tailings located in the northern part of the Republic of Tajikistan, which remained abandoned after the collapse of the USSR, which are being in the process of rehabilitation.

In the conclusion, students and teachers of Lomonosov Moscow State University Branch in Dushanbe with the utmost interest has been asking questions they concerned about, and had an intense discussion on the aspects of nuclear safety.  All the participants of the scientific seminar, in particular Doctor of technical science, working in Science, Innovation and International Relations Department at MSU Branch Umarova Tatiana Mukhsinovna expressed sincere appreciation to the Director of NRSA NAST Dr. Ilhom Mirsaidzoda for presenting the comprehensive report, which allowed students to familiarize with the field of nuclear and radiation safety. Taking this opportunity, Dr. Ilhom Mirsaidzoda invited students to visit the Regional Training Center of NRSA NAST.
