Participation of Tajik Scientists in the Side Event titled "The Role of the International Community in Reducing Risks Associated with Legacy Sites in Central Asia" in the framework of the 68th IAEA General Conference
The Director of the CBRN Safety and Security Agency of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, Ilhom Mirsaidzoda, participated in the side event titled "The Role of the International Community in Reducing Risks Associated with Legacy Sites in Central Asia," held on September 16, 2024, as part of the 68th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
In his presentation, Ilhom Mirsaidzoda emphasized the importance of rehabilitation work carried out in cooperation with the Russian Federation. He noted that these efforts represent a significant contribution to ensuring environmental and radiation safety at legacy sites, which pose potential risks to public health and the environment in Central Asia.
Ilhom Mirsaidzoda also spoke about ongoing collaboration with international partners in this area, focusing on regions impacted by previous nuclear programs. He expressed his gratitude to the Russian Federation for the technical and financial support, which has substantially improved safety at several critically important legacy sites in Tajikistan.
This side event brought together international experts and representatives from various countries who discussed current and future measures to reduce risks associated with legacy sites, as well as ways to enhance coordination efforts by the international community to address these challenges.
